Using Manipulatives in Math

RESEARCH AND BENEFITS OF MANIPULATIVES
The use of manipulatives is recommended by the NCTM because it is supported by both learning theory and educational research in the classroom. Manipulatives help students learn by allowing them to move from concrete experiences to abstract reasoning.

It is not enough for students to memorize an algorithm. Students must be able to show and explain their thinking with manipulatives.

In the pictures, we are learning the concept of regrouping.  I have not introduced the algorithm at this point.  I did a silent teach where the students had to watch as I silently solved problems such as 132-8. Without talking, I made trades as needed (1 ten for 10 ones, 1 one hundred for 10 tens).  As students "caught on" to the concept, they began working the problems as well.  As students were ready, they created their own problems for their classmates to solve using the document camera.  At the conclusion, students practiced with partners as I observed/retaught students.
